Be the change you want to see

11/03/2019

CIH East Midlands board chair Emma Lindley shares an update on our Rethinking membership project and challenges members to spread the benefits of getting involved with CIH.

As we enter March, we are coming close to the end of our Rethinking Membership conversations, where we have been asking the sector for their feedback on what CIH should be doing in their local area and how they would like to be a part of that activity.

We’ve been thrilled with the response, with over 400 survey responses so far and I’ve got involved with two workshops, the Twitter debate and the webinar (catch up here).

There have been so many great suggestions and conversations already and some key themes in the feedback are coming through; we’ve already begun discussing these as regional boards and also with the CIH membership team and can’t wait to put some new things into action.

Really great things happen when members are at the heart of CIH’s work and in this blog I want to challenge our members to ask themselves not what CIH can do for them, but what they can do for CIH.

There are so many examples in history of the power of passionate, like-minded individuals working together on a common cause and the difference that they can make. The CIH membership is no different.

In my Rethinking Membership conversations, I have not yet met one person that thinks it isn’t important to invest in yourself and others to be the best professionals we can be and so many have offered to organise and run activities with CIH in their local area. Yet so many look to organisations to take responsibility for pushing membership, qualifications, personal development, etc. But let’s not forget that organisations are made up of the individuals within them, you and me, and we are all leaders and can all effect change.

So, if you believe in CIH and its role in supporting you to be the best you can be, here are a few things you could do to be the change you want to see:

  • Ask for any job candidates to be either CIH qualified or willing to work towards a qualification
  • Talk to CIH about how they can design a training programme or qualification for your organisation so staff understand the social housing context of their role
  • Become a member champion and let your colleagues know about all the activities and resources available to them
  • Make the case for membership and qualifications to key decision makers, tell them how beneficial your membership is to you and why it’s important staff have qualifications
  • Talk to CIH about creating apprenticeship opportunities using the levy
  • Contact your CIH regional manager to visit your organisation and talk through all things CIH with you and your colleagues
  • Get in touch with your regional board to find out what they are planning, offer your support, share your ideas
  • Get involved in the social media conversation
  • Check your membership details are up to date and you are receiving all the latest updates; share these with your colleagues
  • Recommend a colleague attends a CIH event you think they would enjoy

While our survey closes on 15 March, this is not the end of the conversation; the CIH door is always open and there are so many ways to get in touch so please do talk to us about anything any time.
