The Chartered Institute of Housing is the independent voice for housing and the home of professional standards

Calling all Universities, are you maximising the opportunities for your students?

Many undergraduate and post-graduate qualifications contain housing content which could enable students to achieve CIH chartered member status or recognition. Shirley Morris, validation officer at CIH explains how universities can maximise the opportunities for students who are studying housing content/modules/qualifications through the CIH validation service.

At CIH we’re the professional body for all of housing, which means we’re always striving to find new ways to support our members, to provide ongoing support and recognition for professionals within the sector and to ensure you’re the first to know about key sector developments. As part of our commitment to the sector we have a number of educational initiatives, including an awarding organisation focused purely on developing the skills within the housing sector, a Housing Academy accredited to offer a range of qualifications and training initiatives and now we have a validation service aimed specifically at universities and higher education programmes.

The purpose of the CIH validation service is to provide recognition for the housing content within post and undergraduate qualifications/programmes. CIH have identified core learning outcomes which set the foundations for all Chartered members. If a qualification meets all of these learning outcomes then universities can provide their students with the opportunity to become a CIH Chartered member purely through validating their qualification with CIH. Similarly, there are opportunities for universities to apply for partial validation which will provide students with a starting point along the journey towards chartered membership.

With new universities and providers signing up every week, now is definitely the time to consider whether CIH validation is for you and your students. Not only will it provide an additional level of recognition for your qualification but it will provide your students with a whole host of member benefits, from professional networking opportunities, the latest news from the sector and policy updates right through to continuous professional development opportunities. If your students are serious about housing as a career then CIH membership is a must, and chartered membership is the highest level of professional recognition within housing available. It will set your students out as fully qualified, competent and committed housing professionals.
