The Chartered Institute of Housing is the independent voice for housing and the home of professional standards

I didn’t realise how much I had to say before I joined the conversation

16/02/2017

Ahead of The Big Conversation event taking place in Brighton in March we caught up with Dave Gibson, project planner at Lumia Homes, to find out what he made of the recent Leeds event.

In the year since the first Big Conversation (founded by Geraldine Howley in her Presidential year) a lot has changed in housing - some good and some not so good.

One thing that last year’s event in Manchester showed me is that housing has some of the brightest and most dedicated employees, and I was eager to see how the changes we’ve seen over the last year have impacted the way housing professionals are feeling about life in the sector.

I was not disappointed! It was encouraging to hear and see the talent in the next generation of housing. These are the people that can drive this sector forward and meet the challenges we may face. The passion demonstrated really shows the benefit to organisations of investing in the younger generation, including schemes to bring graduates, like me, through the GEM programme.

No housing subject was off topic as delegates tackled challenging subjects around homelessness, affordability, welfare, mixed tenure, building more homes and profit – no longer the dirty word it once was (although we might still call it surplus!). Open and frank discussions were held on the subjects that matter to people the most and the shared experience and imagination of the attendees was great to see.

The event reinvigorated my passion and was a thought-provoking, motivating and informative day. If you can get to Brighton on 8 March, I’d encourage you to come along the next Big Conversation event and experience the eager, enthusiastic excitement that can be found in our future leaders!
