Members say CIH has improved across the board in survey

An annual survey of CIH's members has revealed they think CIH has improved across the organisation. Head of membership Claire Spendley talks about the survey and our plans to continue to improve in 2017.

“Proud to be a member of CIH” – for me, those words really sum up the last six months as head of membership at CIH.

The quote is a comment from a member responding to our second member perception survey, conducted at the end of 2016. It was a short questionnaire for members, helping us to benchmark our progress over the year. The results of this survey are particularly important to us, because we set targets in the 2016 business plan to improve our performance in two core areas – and the excellent news is that we achieved those targets.

The first was around our influencing work. In 2016, 78% of respondents agreed that CIH is a national influencer of policy and opinion, up from 73% in 2015 – business plan target of 75% achieved! In addition, 88% agreed that CIH makes the case for housing, up from 80% in 2015 – a significant increase over and above our business plan target of 82%.

These results reflect the work we’ve done to boost our activity on the national stage with our research on the benefit cap the highlight of a number of key pieces of high-profile policy work. In 2017 we want to grow our influencing opportunities and demonstrate that we have had a tangible impact on policy proposals and political strategies.

The second important area of improvement was around the services we provide to our members. In 2016, 85% of respondents agreed that CIH provides good services to its members, up from 83% in 2015; and 78% agreed that CIH listens to its members, up from 69% in 2015. I’m particularly pleased with this result as it is testament to the work we’ve been doing over the last six months to improve the membership package. In response to member feedback, we’ve focused on increasing opportunities for members to improve their skills, knowledge and professional development – by relaunching our webinar programme; developing our online CPD portal; launching the new online career development course; and relaunching our mentoring scheme.

There is still more work to do. In 2017 we’ll be focusing on further developing the services we provide to support our members with their career development, including boosting the resources accessible to members through CiZone; ensuring a variety of CPD opportunities, through free or low-cost events and training, are available for all members across England; and engaging with employers to ensure they understand the value of membership and supporting the professional development of their employees.

Finally, I want to ensure members understand what they receive as part of their membership package and participate in the opportunities available to them, so we can continue to effectively support members at all stages of their career. In the 2017 member perception survey I’d love to see even more of the positive comments we received this year…

• “Proud to be a member of an organisation that campaigns objectively and is willing to work collaboratively with local and national government, the independent and private sectors.”

• “I greatly value my membership, and the route I took to obtain chartered status as a critical milestone in the development of my career.”

• “CIH is invaluable in keeping me informed of key housing issues”

• “Important national voice for members”

The views of our members are very important to us. If you have any feedback you’d like to share, or suggestions of support you’d like to receive from CIH in 2017, contact membership services.
