Be Bold in your career

Keen to give your career a boost but not sure where to start? Diana Taseva, Customer services co-ordinator at CIH Scotland, says continuing professional development is a brilliant way of working out the next steps you want to take.

Continuing professional development (CPD) is a really important part of CIH membership – if you’re not sure what it means, it’s all about tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain both formally and informally.

As both a member and employee of CIH, I am keen to develop my marketing and communications skills, as part of my own CPD. My current role in the Scotland team does involve a certain amount of marketing (among many other things!). But I want to get more involved and hit the ground running – which is how I ended up on an exciting shadowing experience at TAI, the CIH Cymru conference.

TAI was the ideal opportunity for me to try something new and exciting. It was very fast-paced, but the team at CIH Cymru were very supportive, and I learnt a lot during the conference. I spent most of the time shadowing the marketing team – helping me learn about blogging, engagement via Twitter and other social media, and some interview techniques – very useful and interesting stuff! I also got involved in filming, and even some live streaming of the conference sessions – something I’d never done before, and I am now keen to try this out in Scotland as well.

CIH has been incredibly supportive in giving me the opportunity to develop my marketing skills – something that I really enjoy doing, and it counts towards my CPD too. I learnt a lot during those few days in Wales, and I feel that my confidence has grown significantly. As a result, I am gradually becoming more involved in the marketing and communications side of things in the Scotland office. Sometimes it’s simple stuff like tweeting or updating our new LinkedIn showcase page, but I am now more involved in planning and implementing of some of our marketing campaigns as well. Both the organisation and the individual benefit from personal development, so never underestimate it.

I am feeling really motivated after my recent experiences, so I have decided to sign up for CIH’s Be bold in your career online course, to help me figure out the next steps in my development, and how I can improve myself. Some of my colleagues have already participated, and spoke very highly of it. It only takes a couple of hours a week, and it is the ideal tool to help you move your career forward. CIH members benefit from a huge discount on it too – so why not sign up today and make things happen?
